Frequently Asked Questions

HC Blend is a zeotropic hydrocarbon blend of isobutane (R-600a, 50%) and propane (R-290, 50%). With a GWP of 3 and zero ODP, it is classified A3 (highly flammable) and is intended for use in domestic and commercial refrigeration and automotive air conditioning systems approved for hydrocarbon refrigerant use.

HC Blend may be used as a low-GWP alternative to R-134a and R-12 in selected applications, subject to system design review, component and elastomer compatibility verification, charge limit compliance, and equipment manufacturer approval. It is not a direct or universal drop-in replacement — its A3 flammability classification means it must only be used in systems specifically designed and approved for hydrocarbon refrigerants.

HC Blend is classified A3 — highly flammable — and must be handled only by trained and certified HVAC&R professionals. Charging must be performed in accordance with system design limits and applicable safety standards. Adequate ventilation, leak detection, and ignition source control are mandatory. Use is subject to local regulations, national safety codes, and equipment manufacturer approvals.

HC Blend is compatible with mineral oil (MO), alkylbenzene (AB), and POE lubricants, subject to equipment manufacturer verification. In many cases, an oil change is not required when servicing compatible existing systems.

HC Blend Refrigerant: The Natural Low-GWP Hydrocarbon Blend for Refrigeration & Automotive AC

HC Blend is a zeotropic hydrocarbon refrigerant blend of isobutane (R-600a, 50%) and propane (R-290, 50%). With a GWP of just 3 and zero ozone depletion potential, it is one of the lowest-impact refrigerants in the DewGas product range. Classified A3 (highly flammable), HC Blend is intended exclusively for use by trained and certified HVAC&R professionals in systems that have been approved and designed for hydrocarbon refrigerant use.

HC Blend operates at pressure levels generally comparable to R-12 and R-134a, making it a potential low-GWP alternative in selected high-temperature refrigeration and automotive air conditioning applications — subject to system design review, component compatibility checks, charge limit compliance, and equipment manufacturer approval. It is compatible with MO, AB, and POE lubricants subject to manufacturer verification, which can simplify service in existing systems. HC Blend is supplied in 170 g dispensing cans and is AHRI 700 certified and QR-verified at every can.

How We Handle A3 Refrigerants in Our Facilities

HC Blend carries an ASHRAE A3 safety classification — highly flammable. We handle it under strict protocols across both our manufacturing facilities.

Dedicated Filling Zones

HC Blend is filled in designated hazardous-area zones with explosion-proof equipment, gas detection, and emergency shutdown systems.

No Ignition Sources

Strict no-ignition-source controls within the filling and storage areas — all equipment is ATEX / IECEx rated for hydrocarbon service.

Certified Personnel Only

All filling, handling, and recovery operations are performed exclusively by trained and certified technicians per applicable safety codes.

When using HC Blend, ensure that all charging and recovery equipment is specifically rated and approved for A3 hydrocarbon refrigerants. Verify component and elastomer compatibility prior to use. Charging must remain within system design charge limits and comply with IEC/EN/ISO safety standards and local regulatory requirements.

Where HC Blend Refrigerant is Used

Domestic Refrigerators

HC Blend is used as a low-GWP alternative to R-12 and R-134a in domestic refrigerators in systems designed and approved for hydrocarbon refrigerant use. Its pressure characteristics, similar to those of R-12 and R-134a, allow it to function in high-temperature refrigeration cycles typical of household appliances.

Commercial Refrigeration

Used in commercial refrigeration equipment including food coolers, vending machines, large supermarket refrigerators, and display cabinets — where the equipment has been designed and approved for hydrocarbon refrigerants. HC Blend’s near-zero GWP makes it increasingly relevant for commercial operators subject to environmental and sustainability reporting requirements.

Automotive Air Conditioning

HC Blend is used in bus and car air conditioning systems approved for hydrocarbon refrigerant use. Its thermodynamic profile makes it a technically compatible candidate for automotive AC applications, subject to system design review, component compatibility verification, and compliance with applicable automotive safety standards and manufacturer approvals.
