R-404A is a pseudo-azeotropic HFC blend composed of R-143a (52%), R-125 (44%), and R-134a (4%). It is classified A1 — non-toxic and non-flammable — with zero ODP, and is the industry standard refrigerant for commercial and industrial refrigeration at low and medium temperature ranges.
R-404A is used in commercial refrigeration (cold rooms, display units, supermarket showcases, ice makers, refrigerated warehouses), industrial refrigeration (processing industry chillers), domestic freezers, refrigerated transport, and ice skating rinks.
R-404A is a pseudo-azeotropic blend. Unlike azeotropic blends, its individual components can fractionate if charged from the gas phase, altering the blend composition and degrading system performance. Always charge R-404A from the liquid phase as instructed by the equipment manufacturer.
R-404A requires Polyolester (POE) oil. It does not have mutual solubility with mineral oils or alkylbenzene oils conventionally used in R-22 and R-502 systems. When converting existing equipment, use compound oils with mutual solubility such as POE, or take special measures to return oil to the compressor.

Responsible Recovery and Disposal of R-404A
R-404A carries a GWP of 3922 — among the higher GWP refrigerants in commercial use — which means responsible end-of-life handling is critical. R-404A must never be vented to atmosphere. We recommend using certified refrigerant recovery equipment to reclaim R-404A from systems before servicing or decommissioning. Recovered refrigerant should be returned to an authorised reclaimer or collected through our cylinder return programme. India’s phasedown schedule under the Kigali Amendment makes responsible recovery of high-GWP refrigerants not just an environmental responsibility but an increasingly regulatory one.
