R-438A is a five-component HFC zeotropic blend (R-125, R-134a, R-32, R-600, R-601a) developed as a near drop-in replacement for R-22. It is classified A1 — non-toxic and non-flammable — with zero ODP and a GWP of 2265, and is used in domestic, industrial, and transport air conditioning systems.
R-438A is a near drop-in replacement for R-22. It has similar pressure-enthalpy characteristics to R-22 across a wide range of evaporator temperatures, making it suitable for use in existing R-22 equipment without rerating or safety reclassification. No equipment modification is required in most retrofit scenarios.
In most cases, no. R-438A is compatible with mineral oil (MO), alkylbenzene (AB), and polyolester (POE) lubricants — the oils already used in most R-22 systems. An oil change is typically not necessary, which reduces retrofit time and cost.
R-438A is a zeotropic blend. Zeotropic blends must always be charged in the liquid phase to maintain the correct composition ratio and prevent fractionation. Vapour charging can alter the blend ratio in the cylinder and impair system performance.

Responsible Recovery and Disposal of R-438A
R-438A carries a GWP of 2265 and must never be vented to atmosphere. Use certified refrigerant recovery equipment to reclaim R-438A before servicing or decommissioning any system. Recovered gas should be returned to an authorised reclaimer or collected through our cylinder return programme. As India progresses through its HFC phasedown obligations under the Kigali Amendment, responsible handling of HFC refrigerants like R-438A is both an environmental and a regulatory responsibility.
Domestic Air Conditioning
R-438A is used as a near drop-in replacement for R-22 in domestic split ACs and window units.
